Subscriptions are one of the fastest-growing household expense categories. The average household now pays for six or more streaming, software, or digital service subscriptions — and many of these are split informally with roommates, partners, or family members.
The problem: subscriptions are billed to one person's card on a schedule, the other people benefit, and reimbursement happens inconsistently or not at all. Over time, the primary account holder ends up absorbing significantly more than their share.
Which Subscriptions Are Actually Shareable?
Not all subscriptions are designed to be shared. In 2026, most major services have tightened their household sharing policies:
- Netflix: Standard and Premium plans allow one extra member add-on. Password sharing outside the household now requires paying for an extra slot.
- Spotify: Premium Duo and Family plans are designed for sharing — Duo for 2 people at the same address, Family for up to 6.
- Apple One: Family tier covers up to 5 household members across Apple TV+, Apple Music, Arcade, and iCloud storage.
- YouTube Premium: Family plan covers up to 5 additional members at the same address.
- Disney+: Household sharing rules apply; extra members outside the household require an add-on fee.
Check each service's current terms before sharing credentials. The era of freely sharing passwords is largely over.
The Fairest Split: Equal Division
For subscriptions that all household members use, an equal split is straightforward and fair. If Netflix's premium plan costs $22.99/month and three roommates all use it, each person pays $7.66/month.
The person whose card is billed sends a Venmo request to the others each month. They pay the same day. This is clean and simple when everyone is reliable.
When Usage Is Unequal
One roommate watches Netflix daily. Another uses it twice a month. Should they pay the same amount?
For most subscriptions, yes — and here is why. The subscription cost is fixed regardless of usage. You are not paying more because someone streams more. You are paying for access. Equal access means equal payment.
The exception: if one person genuinely does not want the service and only has access because they live there, they should not be required to pay for it.
Bundling to Reduce Per-Person Cost
Household-tier and family plans typically cost significantly less per person than individual plans. A Spotify Premium individual plan is $11.99/month. Spotify Family at $17.99/month covers six people — about $3/person. The math for bundling is almost always better.
When setting up a household subscription system, audit what everyone is paying individually and see whether consolidating to family plans saves money overall. Often it does, and one person can take the account manager role in exchange for the others Venmo-ing their share monthly.
Assigning Account Manager Roles
For each subscription, one person holds the account (and the billing relationship). The others owe that person their share. Rotate account manager roles annually if you want to share the administrative burden.
Best practice: the account manager sends a reminder at the start of each month with the per-person amount. Others pay within 24 hours. Do not let it accumulate — a four-month backlog of $7.66 is somehow more annoying to collect than the amount warrants.
Tracking Shared Subscriptions
Keep a simple list of every shared subscription, who holds the account, the monthly cost, and each person's share. Update it when subscriptions are added, cancelled, or price-changed. Review annually to audit whether you are still using everything you are splitting.
Shared subscription audits are surprisingly useful — households regularly discover they are splitting the cost of services no one is actively using.
When a Roommate Moves Out
When someone leaves the household, remove them from all shared subscriptions and recalculate everyone's share. If they were the account holder, transfer the account to someone who is staying.
Do not leave shared subscriptions with departed roommates on them. Apart from the policy violation, it creates a billing relationship with someone you may not be on great terms with.
